Private Tax Debt Collection - What to Expect

If You Owe Money to the IRS, You May Be Contacted by a Private Collection Agency

In the past, you could be almost 100% certain that if someone called you claiming to be collecting a tax debt for the IRS, that it was a scam.

Now, however, new laws require the IRS to contract with several private collection agencies to collect overdue tax accounts. 

If your account is assigned to one of these agencies, you will recieve a letter from the IRS telling you so. You will also receive a letter from the agency. Both of these letters will have a unique identification number. If anyone calls you, expect them to have this number!
